Last year, during Food Day 2015, was the very first Come To The Table free community meal. It started in response to meetings with Somerville youth about how the community might help improve access to healthy food for residents, and it now takes place 5-7pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers from many members of the Somerville Food Security Coalition and Connexion, this monthly free hot meal with delicious food takes place in a lively atmosphere, welcoming to all. Families, teens, and individuals from all throughout Somerville come together to celebrate community and share a meal. Each month there are different activities and new people to meet! There are a wealth of resources, in the form of both information and healthy food options –to eat and to take home! Please bring your own carry bag and containers.

Help celebrate our 1 year anniversary of this exciting event, just in time for the 2016 Food Day! Live music from folks at Groundwork Somerville and activities provided by The Beautiful Stuff Project will add to the special festivities. We look forward to seeing you there! Additional partners include: Food for Free, CHA-Somerville Community Health Agenda, Somerville Homeless Coalition, Somerville Health and Human Services, Shape Up Somerville, U. Mass Extension, Teen Empowerment, and CAAS Head Start and numerous interns and volunteers who help make the meal happen each month. Volunteers are welcome to help with everything from cooking and set up, to greeting guests and clean up.

Food Day's here again!

It's almost time for Food Day 2016. Where did the time go? Well, Somerville has surely been busy over the summer months with farmers' markets, mobile markets, school gardens, community gardens, community meals, and so much more. Now as the harvest season is drawing to a close, it's a good time to reflect on our food system--that's what Food Day's all about!

On October 24th, Somerville will join other communities and institutions across the country to celebrate the 6th annual Food Day.  This event was created with the intention of having “individuals and organizations come together to learn, debate and mobilize to improve our food system and the American diet”. We ask questions such as how we can ensure everyone has enough healthy food to sustain themselves, how we can make sure our food system and food choices are beneficial for our planet, and more.
